Springs is well documented. There is, firstly, War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator (New York: George H. Doran Company, 1926), which Springs based in part on his friend John McGavock Grider’s diaries, in part on his own and other pilots’ experiences. There is also a biography by Burke Davis, War Bird: The Life and Times of Elliott White Springs (Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1987). And David K. Vaughan edited and published Springs’s war letters in Letters from a War Bird: The World War I Correspondence of Elliott White Springs (Columbia, South Carolina: The University of South Carolina Press, 2012).
